El Camino Real: A Vital Lifeline

El Camino Real, stretching from the San Francisco border to San Jose, stands as the only continuous north-south route for those relying on transit, walking, and biking in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. Laden with shops, services, jobs, schools, and residences, it serves as a lifeline for countless residents. However, it also harbors a darker side – a high-collision corridor where hundreds of bicyclists and pedestrians have suffered injuries or lost their lives.

The El Camino Real corridor is evolving, but this transformation lacks comprehensive planning and coordination, often neglecting the needs of all users. The El Camino Real 2030 Campaign is a response to this crucial need for change. Guided by principles like Vision Zero and Transportation Equity, the campaign aims to create a well-connected, inviting corridor with a human-first design that includes bike infrastructure.

The primary goal of the El Camino Real 2030 Campaign is to establish El Camino Real as a consistent green, "complete-streets" passage prioritizing safety and inclusivity. By the year 2030, the vision is to transform this corridor into a model of sustainable transportation and community development. The campaign focuses on key aspects:

  1. Safety First: Prioritizing safety for all users, the campaign aligns with Vision Zero principles to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries.

  2. Inclusivity: With a human-first design approach, the campaign aims to make El Camino Real accessible and welcoming for everyone, regardless of their mode of transportation.

  3. Bike Infrastructure: Recognizing the importance of cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation, the campaign advocates for the integration of bike infrastructure along the entire corridor.

  4. Community: Creating spaces for community interaction, the campaign emphasizes the importance of space to encourage social engagement and a sense of place.

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) is the ONLY non-profit working for safer bicycling and a stronger bike culture in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

SVBC does this by:

  1. Engaging in local-level efforts to advocate for safer streets, bike trails, and lanes.

  2. Hosting year-round, complimentary, captivating, and informative events aimed at both educating and drawing in new bicyclists.

Your contributions make it possible to host social rides, advocate for safe streets and access, and provide riding skill and bike maintenance programs for children and adults of all levels.

We believe that one simple tool – the humble bicycle – can combat such regional challenges as high transportation and housing costs, growing inequities based on race and income, climate disruption, a lack of physical activity, and growing health problems while making our communities greener and healthier.
