Large-scale stadium events bring tremendous energy to Silicon Valley, but they also bring hours of gridlock, parking frustration, and increased air pollution from idling cars. This summer, our community saw one such event make its mark in the Bay Area, as the World Cup brought in over 400,000 spectators in less than a month, with each of them ending up in a seat at Levi’s Stadium on game day. Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) sought to empower each of them to ride to the games by providing safe and secure Bike Valet.

Active transportation is surging across the Peninsula and South Bay, and SVBC is retooling to meet the groundswell. We are officially shifting toward a scalable local team model: putting greater autonomy directly into the hands of grassroots leaders while SVBC provides the structural backing, advocacy training, and micro-grant support. Launched earlier this year, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's (VTA) Across Barrier Connections (ABC) Plan is a countywide initiative, to identify addressing these longstanding mobility barriers and make crossing freeways safer and easier for people walking and biking.  

As part of the ABC Plan project team, Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) and Catalyze Silicon Valley (Catalyze SV) are working alongside VTA to ensure the plan reflects the experiences of the people who use these crossings every day. 

Last May was Bike Month, which meant more people were taking a fresh look at how they get around—whether it’s for commuting, errands, or just getting outside.
