All SVBC instructors are certified League Cycling Instructors by the League of American Bicyclists.

Tim Oey

I love teaching bicyclists and have taught a few thousand over the years. I ride everywhere in any weather. I can haul just about anything - couches, canopies, and up to 20 bikes at once with my bike. I biked across North America twice on business trips. Bicycling for transportation solves nearly all of the world's problems and gets you where you need to go at the same time!

Anthony Montes

When I joined SVBC’s advocacy team, I was eager to learn more about the bicycling classes offered. As a casual bike rider, primarily on trails, I wanted to improve my road riding skills. SVBC's classes completely changed my perspective. Not only did I gain the knowledge and skills to commute confidently, I was also inspired to become an instructor. With leadership’s support, I completed the training and had the incredible opportunity to teach my first Smart Cycling Class in 2024. I'm excited to share my passion for cycling and help you become a SMART Cyclist!

Giuliano Carlini

I became a cycling instructor to promote cycling over car use. I believe it will improve health, make communities more vibrant, and help our world. Nearly all children who can ride and make safe judgment and 30% of adults have very limited mobility by not being able to drive. I enjoy teaching folks to ride, and to do so safely. I want to help them avoid paying over $10,000 a year for cars (even more in subsidies) to reach basic needs: work, school, shops, friends' homes, etc.

Violeta Palatto

I love biking. Becoming a League Cycling Instructor (LCI) showed me how much more there is to learn about biking safely - things many people overlook or underestimate. I'm an avid long-distance road rider who discovered you can also ride your bike to work, carry cargo, and run errands all while having fun and getting a workout! My favorite part of teaching is connecting with attendees after the class, helping them build their confidence, and watching them discover the joy of biking for all purposes. I love how e-bikes, in particular, have been an everyday ride-changer for me and made biking more accessible for many.

I enjoy helping people feel confident biking. I know that riding near cars can be intimidating for some, but that with the right mix of defensive moves, route planning, and best practices, riders will be safer on streets. My favorite part of teaching is seeing students figure out how to balance on a bike for the first time. I also love seeing former students at the San José Bike Party rides every third Friday or at the San José bike clinic. I am also a SVBC bike parking supervisor and enjoy mountain biking and bike packing in my time off.

Learning to ride a bicycle was painful and difficult with repeated falls, scrapes, and tears. Once I did right before giving up, it became a great moment of joy and pride. After being frustrated by driving and visiting cities internationally that are not car-dependent, I developed a desire to walk, ride, and take transit for everyday transportation. Free bike education, like SVBC's classes, helped me be much safer and more confident while riding (including near cars) for commuting, grocery trips, visiting friends, and more! My favorite moments are seeing people overcome their struggles and light up with pride and joy, especially when they learn more quickly or less painfully than I did.

When I first started riding my bicycle, I was very scared to be on the road with fast moving cars. I did not know what to do when the chain slipped off or a tire went flat. I then joined the Almaden Cycle Touring Club (ACTC) and took my first bike driving class. My confidence level skyrocketed. I loved it so much I decided to take more classes to become an LCI. My happiest moments are seeing students who show up very nervous and end up with big smiles by the end of class!

I work to make the benefits of bicycling more accessible to everyone possible! My favorite part about teaching is how much your skills and confidence grow with a little good coaching. I hope SBVC classes and trainings break down barriers so that more people in our region can enjoy the benefits of biking.

Chelsea Biklen

I have been a League Cycling Instructor (LCI) since 2017. I started in the field of bike safety for youth and adults in 2014 with the YMCA Y-bike program and 2015 in school districts. After becoming the Safe Routes to School program coordinator for the City of Cupertino, I decided to get LCI certified and began teaching cycling classes and activities as a licensed instructor. I went on to work for SVBC as an advocacy and program manager and now work for SVBC on an ad-hoc basis as a bike instructor. I love to bike, to help support cycling confidence in my communities, and to empower more people to bike.

Tony Le

I've been a cycling for nearly 6 decades. I delivered newspapers in the 1970s, navigated university campuses, and raced on both road and mountain bikes. I was also President of the Almaden Cycle Touring Club for 9 years. Since 2021, I have been teaching with San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, from children to adults, beginners to advanced. Now, as a retired Stanford Medical Researcher, I can devote more time to teach cycling classes. I am thrilled to join Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition in my hometown of San Jose.

Anthony DiSalvo

I am a lifelong cyclist - from co-founding my high school bike club to bringing my bicycle onboard my Navy ship to riding bicycles in many countries. As a League Certified Instructor, I started teaching cycling safety in the Bay Area in 2009 with multiple bicycle coalitions. My teaching experience includes all levels of bicycle education in the classroom, on the road, and consulting with local cycling clubs safety programs. I have instructed all age groups from middle school to adults. I enjoy my daily cycling commute and wide-ranging weekend recreational riding. When people ask me why I ride my bicycle, I respond, “Because it's fun!”

Kyle Klimas

I spent most of my life riding bikes in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties and the Bay Area, whether it be commuting on city streets or riding on trails. I have also spent my entire career working in the bike industry from building and repairing bikes to teaching others to become more comfortable and capable with bikes. From this, I know how much cycling can help local communities as well as the obstacles that come along with it. This is why I believe in the importance of teaching bike-safety, including proper bike maintenance. With these skills and understanding, anyone can become a safer and more confident cyclist that benefits from all the joys of cycling. You can do that at our classes, so check them out and sign up for one today!

Zeke Mead

I have been enjoying riding bikes for 50+ years (which is difficult for me to understand because I still think of myself as 26). Unsupported long distance tour cycling is my favorite way to spend two weeks or two days. I have done trips from my home in Redwood City to Half Moon Bay and from Santiago, Spain to Lisbon, Portugal.

Seeing the excitement of learning to ride on a student’s face is equally rewarding. I love the moment people first experience being able to ride a bike. When they feel both the accomplishment of learning the ability and the wide horizon of possibilities.

Bob Ward

I have been coaching cycling skills since 2009 across a variety of classes, including climbing and descending skills and paceline skills with multiple organizations. I enjoy helping beginners "get it." I want them to gain the skills and confidence to take their riding to the next level and end up saying, "I did this!"

Wynn Kageyama

My cycling journey began in earnest in 2003 when Robert Raburn, the Executive Director of East Bay Bicycle Coalition (now Bike East Bay), recommended that I become a League Cycling Instructor to teach for them. From there, I am lucky enough to teach for Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, Wheel Kids Bicycle Club, coach for Bicycle Solutions, be Education Chair for Fremont Freewheelers Bicycle Club. I also have my own YouTube channel and organize Fix Your Bike Day. I love teaching cycling, going cyclocamping, and teaching others to be top notch bicycle mechanics. Happy cycling!
