One stop-shop for Upcoming Bike/Ped plans in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties - Dec 2019

Many cities in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties are updating their bicycle and pedestrian master plans and are at different stages in the process. Below is a list of all these cities with a short description about where they stand in this process. Click the links to read further and provide input for the cities that you travel to/through by bike and share this information with your friends and neighbors.

Caltrans District 4, Pedestrian Plan

Caltrans is developing this plan to look at how to make walking along and across the State Highway System easier. They are studying existing gaps and barriers, and developing a list of proposed pedestrian needs to address these issues. You can provide information about issues on or near state highways like I-280, US-101, and State Route 82 (El Camino Real) here

Burlingame, Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan

The City of Burlingame is in the process of updating its Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. This plan will focus on enhancing Burlingame’s bicycle and pedestrian network including on-street bike routes, Bay Trail connections, pedestrian facilities, and street and highway crossings. Draft recommendations for the Plan are available for public comment on the website until February 20, 2020.

Daly City, Walk Bike Daly City

Daly City has been leading a year-long effort to update the City’s 2013 Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. The goal of the new plan is to make walking and biking in Daly City safer, easier and more popular than ever before. The draft plan is now available, and the City invites the community to review it and provide feedback until January 10, 2020. The main document is available here while the appendices are here.

Menlo Park, Transportation Master Plan

This Plan will provide the ability to identify appropriate projects to enhance the transportation network, conduct community engagement to ensure such projects meet the communities’ goals and values, and prioritize projects based on need for implementation. It will serve as an update to the City’s Bicycle and Sidewalk Plans. The community engagement phase is over with over 1200 participants participating in various events. The results will be out in a few months.

Millbrae Active Transportation Plan

The City has received a grant from C/CAG to prepare a pedestrian and bicycle master plan for Millbrae. The purpose of the plan is to assess the needs of pedestrians and cyclists; identify improvements to infrastructure and programs; ensure eligibility to certain transportation funding sources; and coordinate pedestrian and bicycle local actions and regional projects.

Walk Bike Pacifica

A new comprehensive Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan for the City of Pacifica is currently in development. This plan will update existing plans and identify needs and opportunities to improve walking and bicycling on city streets as well as on trails and beach access.

Redwood City Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan

This will be the first active transportation plan of its kind for the City. It is at a very initial stage where the City has just received TDA3 funding and is working on next steps.

San Carlos, Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan

The City of San Carlos wants to build a transportation system that provides more options to walk and bike. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan process is underway to identify and prioritize new bikeways, walkways, trails, and pedestrian enhancements throughout San Carlos. Draft recommendations for pedestrian and bicycle network improvements are available for review and comment through the Community Input Map.

City of San Mateo, Bicycle Master Plan Update

This plan is dedicated to expanding the city’s bicycle network while maintaining the quality of ride, safety for all, and accessibility to everyone who wants to enjoy San Mateo on human-powered transportation. The draft plan is ready and open for feedback until December 13, 2019.

San Mateo County Comprehensive Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan Update

The City and County Association of Governments (C/CAG) recently hired Toole Design to update their Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, which was last updated in 2011. Toole is currently in the process of finalizing the scope of work, schedule and high-level ideas for the plan with the C/CAG BPAC.

Unincorporated San Mateo County Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan

The County Office of Sustainability is working to develop this plan to help determine priorities for walking and biking improvements in unincorporated San Mateo County. The plan, which is the first of its kind for unincorporated SMC will also give planners, engineers, advocates, and decision-makers the tools they need to build safe, comfortable, and convenient facilities for walking and biking. There will be a second round of outreach once the draft plan is developed (late spring/early summer)

Active South City, Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan for the City of South San Francisco

This plan is currently in development and is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2020. It will update existing plans and identify needs and opportunities to improve walking and bicycling in South City. Use the public input map to review and comment on the plan’s proposed draft network improvements. 

SANTA CLARA COUNTY

Los Altos Complete Streets Master Plan

Los Altos Complete Streets commission has recently hired Alta Planning+Design for the development of this plan. The complete Streets Master plan will have four sections i)Bicycle and pedestrian transportation plan ii)Suggested routes to school iii)Transit transportation Plan and iv)Concept Plan Line Work for up to 3 Corridors and Intersection Hot Spots.

Milpitas Trail and Bike Plan

The city recently hired Alta Planning and Design to update their bike/ped plan, which was last updated in 2009.

San Jose Better Bike Plan 2025

San José is becoming a place where biking is a regular and common activity for people of all ages and abilities. Better Bike Plan 2025 will update San José Bike Plan 2020 to create a bicycle network that is safe, comfortable and convenient for all. The plan is in its last phase and a Draft Plan is expected in Winter 2020.

Santa Clara, Pedestrian Master Plan

This plan tends to establish a long-term vision for improving walking in Santa Clara through project recommendations necessary to expand the existing network; complete network gaps; provide greater connectivity to public transportation; increase mobility; and encourage the public to choose more sustainable modes of transportation. The plan will go to the Council for final approval in Winter 2020.

Santa Clara Creek Trails Master Plan

Santa Clara is finalizing their Creek Trails Master Plan. It will be an update for the 2013 plan and was incorporated into the Bike Plan Update 2018.

Sunnyvale Active Transportation Plan

This Plan will help the City strategically invest in programs and projects to make walking and bicycling safer and more convenient for residents. In addition, the Plan will analyze ways to make it safer for Sunnyvale students to walk and bike to school. They recently conducted a community workshop to take public feedback and plan to release their first draft in February.
