RIDESJ "Roll Models" ready to lead the way!
You may have heard that our fun ride series, RIDESJ (Roll Into Downtown & Explore San Jose – see what we did there?), is all about celebrating our diverse community by visiting spaces such as artist workshops, eateries, and landmarks. But, did you know that these rides are happening in large part due to community members like you? It’s true! SVBC staff and volunteer ride leaders will welcome and guide you along each of these fun, cruise-paced rides. On January 24, we had a full house packed with outstanding folks who answered our call for “Roll Models” at the first RIDESJ Ride Leader Training. Peter Bennett, from San Jose DOT’s Bike and Pedestrian Program, began the evening with a fun talk about Better Bikeways. That’s the network of new bike lanes in downtown San Jose designed to provide low-stress travel for people who ride bicycles, many of which will be included along the RIDESJ routes. After learning about the network, SVBC staff led the presentation on ride leader responsibilities. We discussed how to lead by example – that is, knowing and following the rules of the road – as well as leading by inspiration. This means helping other riders feel comfortable along the way by ensuring that the group stays together, sharing tips about biking around town, and stopping the group if help is needed to fix minor mechanical issues. You’ll see two or three of these wonderful folks at each of the RIDESJ rides, so please join us!Bummed that you weren’t able to attend the training? No worries! We have another one on the books for February 20, from 6 – 8pm here at SVBC (and bring your appetite – we’re serving pizza!). After you attend the training and help lead a ride, you’ll be rewarded with cool SVBC swag and a small stipend – not to mention the joy in your heart from helping others experience the joy of riding in San Jose! Interested? Please RSVP here. We hope you’ll join us!
