San Jose youth participate in summer biking workshop

While many kids around San José enjoyed their last days of summer freedom by watching television and playing video games, sixteen youth participants from the Alma Youth Center took part in a fun, sweat-inducing, environmental-stewardship-building summer biking program. For the second year in a row, SVBC returned to the Alma Youth Center to teach better bicycling as kids aged nine to fifteen learned essential bike riding skills through interactive bicycle safety instruction, fun games, bicycle rodeos (on-bike skills trainings), and an eight-mile bike ride.

Participants also learned about the many health and environmental benefits bicycling has to offer, which incorporated a field trip to the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy. At the Conservancy, participants learned about the local watershed system and about the native habitat in and around the Guadalupe River.

We would like to thank the Michael Lee Environmental Foundation, for making this two-day workshop possible, and for allowing us to bring joy to the youth through bicycling and environmental stewardship.
