Cyclists' deaths shake South Bay and Peninsula

Two cyclists, tragically, have been killed by cars in as many weeks. On September 21, a 25-year-old man was killed by a hit-and-run while riding his bicycle in San José. According to the San José Mercury News, there were no witnesses at the scene. Police are asking those with information to call 408-277-4654. Anonymous tips can be left with Crime Stoppers at 408-947-STOP (7867).

The second killed cyclist, 62-year-old Christopher Chandler of Redwood City, was killed while crossing El Camino Real in Atherton on the morning of October 1. According to KCBS 5, the driver in that incident stopped and cooperated with police.

At SVBC, our thoughts are with the families and friends of these slain cyclists. Nobody should have to worry about losing their life when they get on a bike, and such incidents make us even more determined to educate the public on ways to stay safe on the road, whether in a car or on a bike. It really is possible for all of us to get where we are going without harming others - it just takes some patience and education.
