San Carlos Holly/101 Update
Throughout 2009, the San Carlos Transportation and Circulation Commission, (the "T&C") studied various options to improve traffic flow around the Holly/Highway 101 area.
On January 25, 2010, the City Council unanimously accepted the recommendations of the T&C. The Mark Thomas Company will spend most of 2010 on a Project Study Report, to fine tune the details of the modifications and to determine the project cost. Complete project specifications will not be known until the study report is completed.
It is likely that some sign and lane striping changes will be undertaken on Holly (between Old County Road and Industrial) before the end of 2010. Not only would this be fairly easy and inexpensive to implement, it will ease traffic congestion significantly.
The changes for Holly/101 will include some amenities that should make the area more bicycle (and pedestrian) friendly. The interchange will become a "partial cloverleaf" with an additional signal controlled intersection on the east side of the overcrossing, for vehicles approaching Holly from north-bound U.S. Highway 101. On and off ramps will be designed to have shorter radii to discourage high speed turns by motor vehicles.
It is hoped that a Class I path will be created for east-bound bicyclists and pedestrians, which will loop under the widened, two-lane freeway on-ramp. An additional project near the Holly/101 interchange will be the creation of a Bicycle Boulevard on East San Carlos Avenue, from Old County Road to Industrial Road.
