San Jose ranks first in bike safety education

The Alliance for Biking and Walking has ranked the City of San Jose as the #1 city in the nation for providing bicycle safety education to children. The Alliance's "“Bicycling & Walking in the U.S. – 2010 Benchmarking Report" surveyed the 50 largest U.S. cities and found that one in eight San Jose children receive bicycle safety education.

“San Jose is building a strong reputation as a city where bicycling is safe, common and convenient,” said San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed in a City of San Jose press release. “Promoting bike safety is a critical element of our drive to encourage cycling as a way to protect the environment, ease traffic congestion, and build a healthier community.”

SVBC would like to congratulate San Jose and thank the city for working with our organization to actively promote the bicycle in recent years. The city's press release quoted our own Executive Director, Corinne Winter, "San Jose is making great strides to become one of the best bicycling cities in the country," said Corinne. "A great example: San Jose is the first city to receive a platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Workplace award from the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition."

As the city makes plans to complete a 500 mile bikeway network, add 5,000 bike parking spaces, and boost bike use to 5% of all trips, there's never been a better time to get your family educated in bicycle safety.
