With this blog post, Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition is wrapping up our work on the Focus Cities project for the 2017 federal fiscal year. We were proud to be approached by California Walks to be the local San José bike advocates in a program funded by the Office of Traffic Safety and spearheaded by UC Berkeley SafeTREC and California Walks.

Our campaign to get the best deal for bicycling in the voter-approved Santa Clara County Measure B sales tax had another win last week. In a unanimous vote, the Board of Directors approved San José Mayor Sam Liccardo’s motion to require an assessment of the education and encouragement sub-program of the bicycle and pedestrian category.

Almost two years ago, our work and your voices convinced the Caltrain Joint Powers Board to increase future bike capacity with train electrification (due for 2021). Caltrain has now selected a final car design for the future train sets, and the agency's goals to increase human and bike capacity will be met with an increased number of trains per hour. SVBC collaborated with eleven other organizations on a joint comment letter on the Dumbarton Corridor Study, submitted on Friday, Sept. 29 feasibility study. This letter was a follow-up to our coalition letter back in April and in addition to meetings with SamTrans staff over the past couple months as well as two community forums that we co-hosted. We will continue to share our support for a multi-use trail with decisionmakers until the study goes back to the SamTrans Board later this year.

Bike share has officially exploded with not one but at least six bike share companies offering their services and competing for city and individual customers throughout the Bay Area. Read on for an overview of the types of bike share available and the status of our area’s cities.

Redwood City is preparing to wrap up the El Camino Real Corridor Plan process by the end of the year. The draft plan, which will include protected bike lanes on El Camino Real, is expected to be released at the end of September and we encourage you to submit comments in support.
