Position Title: Program Coordinator
Reports To: Director of Programs
FLSA Status: Salaried Exempt, Full-time
Location: This is a hybrid position with at least 2 days required in office. Our office is located in downtown San Jose, near San Jose State University. This role will also require being out in the field often to implement programs and develop relationships.

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) is a non-profit membership-based organization that seeks to build healthier and more just communities by making bicycling safe and accessible to all. Position Summary

The Programs Coordinator is responsible for co-creating, promoting and implementing the following events and activities:

  • Bike to Wherever Days – coordinating energizer stations & other bike month events

  • Social rides – bring people together with fun and creative activities that get more people biking. The goal is collaboration with trained ride leaders and local organizations to host regular bike rides to spread awareness of the benefits of biking and improve the community’s bike confidence.

  • Youth education – provide programs in-classroom and through “bike rodeos” that teach kids how to ride safely.

  • Adult education – teach periodic workshops that cover a variety of topics to help bring new people to biking and train them up to feel more comfortable biking for everyday use.

  • Valet bike parking – coordinate and supervise volunteers and part-time staff who provide bike parking and bike security at public events. Ensure staff and volunteers engage with the public to promote bicycling.

Essential Functions:

  • Creating and implementing in-person and virtual presentations about bicycle and pedestrian safety skills and traffic rules for youth and adults.

  • Creating, coordinating and implementing on-bike and on-foot skills courses for multiple classes of students and adults

  • Coordinating and implementing social bike rides of 20-100 people

  • Working with organizational and agency partners to implement programs and amplify outreach

  • Training volunteers for education, rides, and bike parking

  • Working with kids & adults to encourage active transportation

  • Traveling to sites while transporting educational and skills course materials.

  • Encouraging participants in programs to get more involved in the bike movement

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate should be a confident bike rider as well as a versatile, flexible, and adaptable team member who can implement programs intended to create lasting behavioral change that results in more people riding bikes for everyday use. The following experience is highly desired:

  • Conversational Spanish and/or bi-lingual in other locally spoken languages

  • Experience working in immigrant, low-income, or Black and Brown communities

  • Bonus: experience with grant writing and management

  • Work and/or volunteer experience teaching bicycle safety to families and youth

  • League Certified Instructor by League of American Bicyclists preferred

  • Experience managing partnerships with community groups, government agencies, and private companies; and building relationships that create program commitment and buy-in

  • Experience implementing programs that lead to lasting behavioral change

  • Experience working with volunteers and understanding how to find and support key community members/volunteers who are interested in becoming more involved in bike culture

  • Detail oriented with the ability to prioritize tasks

  • Ability to work independently, resourceful and a self-starter

  • Familiarity with the Bay Area region and its communities

  • Located in or near San Mateo or Santa Clara counties

  • Candidate must be authorized to work in the United States

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Works with a wide variety of challenges, deadliness and a varied and diverse array of contacts.

  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time

  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds

  • Ability to haul things by bike

  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including heat and cold

  • Sensory requirements: this job requires visual and auditory perception and the ability to communicate verbally

Salary and Benefits:

Starting salary is $64,480. Full-time, exempt position with a competitive benefits package including professional development, paid time off, medical, dental & vision insurance, and 401k.
