Covid-19 and SVBC Events

In these unique and uncertain times, SVBC is reaching out to provide updates, resources and to let you know we are here for you - albeit remotely. We will continue to work for you, our neighbors and greater communities to promote healthy and sustainable living through bicycling.

Biking remains a great form of transportation and recreation. It is also an important source of joy, peace, and wellness. Accordingly, bicycling is a permitted activity under the Bay Area shelter-in-place order as long as social distancing is maintained. We encourage you to keep riding! Additionally, in Santa Clara, San Mateo, Contra Costa, San Francisco counties, officials have said bicycle repair shops can stay open as an essential business because of how important they are in helping people get around–click here for a list of Santa Clara County FAQs.

SVBC EventsFor those of you wondering how you can continue to participate in local team meetings and other SVBC events, most events will be hosted online and others will be canceled or postponed. Please check your event on our calendar and RSVP to ensure you are notified of cancellations or postponements.

JoyRIDESV To help alleviate stress and restlessness, we have created an activity that can bring us together in a socially distant way. The joy of biking is the central theme. While on your ride observe your surroundings and take photos to share. Truth be told, this idea was conceptualized while watching two ducks playing in a mud puddle–they were blissful and served as a reminder to enjoy the small things.

JoyRIDESV Details:

  1. Sign up here: JoyRIDEsv
  2. As an extra bonus, riders who upload a photo from their ride and use the hashtag #joyridesv and tag us @bikeSV (Twitter) or @BikeSiliconValley (Facebook/Instagram) will be entered into drawings for Sports Basement gift cards. We are not encouraging this to be a group ride activity. This is intended to be a solo activity or with others who are part of your household. We look forward to virtually celebrating the sights and joys from your ride!

How this is impacting SVBCMany of you have been reaching out to ask how this is impacting SVBC and how you can help. It is true that, like many other nonprofits, we are facing a sudden and severe drop in funding from our program work, as rides, school-based education and the like are canceled. We are incredibly grateful to those many members who have felt inspired to contribute more generously as a result. Thank you!

When we get through this, our community and planet will need us more than ever as we seek to rebuild our economy and society in a more sustainable manner that increases dependence on carbon-free modes of transportation (like the bicycle!) and reduces the likelihood of additional calamities for our planet. You can continue to support this work here. Thank you for all you have done and are doing to create a community and movement that is leading this effort!

Stay healthy, stay well.
