Colma El Camino Real Bike/Ped Improvements Project

Map by: Town of Colma

Town of Colma is working on bike and pedestrian improvements along El Camino Real and the draft alternatives are out and need your feedback! Learn more on the website, or go directly to the alternatives to compare tradeoffs and provide your input. About Colma El Camino Real Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan

The Town of Colma received a grant from the Caltrans Sustainable Communities Program to improve safety and mobility for people who walk and bike along El Camino Real. The Town is working on a Plan to not only enhance overall quality of life for people walking and biking along this corridor, but also help them with its sustainability goals. Improvements to the corridor will enhance safety, encourage the use of sustainable transportation, and provide better connectivity to BART stations and bus stops.

The Plan is being developed with Caltrans and a group of stakeholders which meet regularly to discuss and provide input. The staff is also incorporating feedback from the community at different stages. Initially, they asked the community to identify their priorities along the corridor and based on that they have developed three conceptual design alternatives which are now available online for public input. Finally, the staff will work with Caltrans to identify potential funding sources for implementation for the most preferred alternative.

Please share your preferred alternative in the survey here for consideration and see below for our recommendations. Every alternative also comes with detailed design and tradeoffs for comparison.

SVBC’s recommendations:We’d like to begin with a shoutout to the Town of Colma for putting together this package of alternatives, all of which include bike lanes! While we support all the given alternatives, we recommend the alternative below (the one with protected bike lanes) since they provide the most separation, speed reduction, and safety:

Segment A, from Albert M Teglia Boulevard to Mission Road: Alternative A.2

This alternative address speeding issues and prioritizes safety as well as public health. It increases pedestrian/bicyclist safety and comfort by reducing the number of travel lanes and creating a parking-protected bikeway physically separated from vehicles.

Segment B, from Mission Road to Arlington Drive:  Alternative B.2

This alternative helps reduce vehicle speeds through reduction in number of travel lanes. It increases pedestrian/bicyclist safety and comfort by adding a sidewalk and bikeway physically separated from vehicles. It is also cost-effective compared to other alternatives since it only uses the existing paved surface for improvements.

El Camino and Mission Road (Y Intersection):

We recommend incorporating all suggested potential intersection improvements, especially squaring-up the intersection to shorten crossing distances and reducing speeds, installing traffic signal, and providing bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

Please take this survey to have your preferred alternative implemented and also please share widely with your friends and neighbors.
