Bike Ed at Sunday Friends

bicycle, kids, Sunday Friends

We’re excited about the bike safety classes for children that we are sponsoring at Sunday Friends, a San Jose organization which has activities for families every (you guessed it!) Sunday. Super volunteer Dave Fork of SVBC Bicycle Exchange arranged for a grant from the Google Community Grants Fund of Tides Foundation, which enables us to hire League Certified Instructors (LCIs) and provide materials for five Sunday sessions this spring. Sunday Friends is one of the recipients of the bicycles (and helmets) that the Bike Exchange donates to needy children, and Dave wanted to help ensure that the children knew how to ride safely.

There have been two class days so far and there will be three more classes, led by LCI Amos Rendler. For the March classes, he has had the assistance of Spanish speaking LCI, Gabriela Gonzalez McNamara, as well as Tom Cassera and Chris Blancett.

The day includes a 45-minute class, attended also by the parents, on rules of the road with slides and a video, and then on-bike sessions with the children covering ABC quick-check, hand signals, traffic signs, and skill-building drills. Twenty-five children completed the March class.
