Bicycle safety superhero
Recently, I've been getting my credentials together in order to become a League Certified Instructor (LCI), as designated by the League of American Cyclists. The training sessions to become an LCI are few and far between in these parts, so when the good folks at the Presidio YMCA's Ybike program told us they were going to host one, Ernesto and I had to get into gear, quickly. Ernie already passed the Traffic Skills 101 class, so he just had to pass the LCI course pretest. I, on the other hand, had never bothered to actually attend the TS101 program, and had to start from scratch.
Fortunately, the kind people at East Bay Bicycle Coalition host TS101 courses for free, multiple times a year. They are able to provide this service because they receive funding through Alameda County's Measure B half-cent sales tax addition. Imagine that! EBBC did a great job of getting me up to speed on topics like traffic law, safety maneuvers, gear, and bike mechanics. It's a program that everyone who rides (or wants to ride) a bike should take.
Now, I'm staring down the barrel of a very long weekend spent learning how to teach bike skills and lead rides. It actually isn't a bad way to spend a weekend, and I'll come out of the class with a whole host of new skills. I'll be like a a superhero whose magical power is the ability to zap people and make them turn into safe and predictable riders. Yay! Besides, I'll get a weekend off soon -- June, maybe?
Go bikes!
