Parents and kids came out on two wheels to kick off Safe Routes to School in Sunnyvale

Well over one hundred cyclists convened at Las Palmas Park on Saturday, May 21 to take part in the celebratory kickoff ride promoting Safe Routes to Schools in Sunnyvale. The easy three mile ride that looped around two elementary schools allowed families to ride together and discover how fun bicycling around the neighborhood can be.

Before going on the ride, Supervisor Liz Kniss, Councilmember Chris Moylan, Sunnyvale Superintendent Benjamin Picard, and Jim Canova and Christine Kolterman from the Santa Clara Unified School District welcomed all the participants and talked a little bit about how their commutes to school involved much more walking and bicycling than they do nowadays.

Then, with perfect weather for a nice ride, we were off.

There were kids on bike seats and trailers.

After the ride, a whole lot of bikes were parked while participants grabbed a snack.

Other participants had their bikes checked by Alex, a Sports Basement mechanic.

And many learned a little more about the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and the upcoming Safe Routes to School program in Sunnyvale.

Overall, this event sponsored and organized by the City of Sunnyvale, Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, Traffic Safe Communities Network in the Santa Clara County Public Health Department, and Stanford Hospital Trauma Services turned out to be a great success.
