Latest cyclist death inspires new safe overpass campaign

As many of you have likely heard, a cyclist was struck and killed yesterday by a big rig turning right from Alpine Road onto Hwy 280. Our condolences go out to Lauren Perdriau Ward's family and friends.

Adding to the grief over another fallen cyclist is the fact that accidents like this can be prevented when intersections and overpasses are designed with all users in mind, especially those most vulnerable: bicyclists and pedestrians. Bicycling is not dangerous, but the road conditions bicyclists are forced to navigate often are. It is well past time for planners to address cyclist safety in these most dangerous sections of road.

With this in mind, SVBC today announced our new Safe Highway Crossing Campaign in a media release. We will address this issue at the city, county, regional, state, and national levels, advocating for the use of successful methods to allow cyclists and pedestrians safe passage across the most daunting obstacles in our urban landscape: highways.

SVBC has long been an advocate of safer highway crossings. Yesterday's tragedy drives us to work even harder to prevent future injury and death to cyclists who are simply trying to make their way across town.
