SVBC office bike move cleans up and hauls hard

Volunteers wait to turn in front of a gas station. The irony was palpable.

Over 20 volunteers came out to Willow Glen this past Saturday to pack up and haul the contents of the SVBC office across town to our new home at 1922 The Alameda. Trailers, panniers, racks, packs, and even a converted hand dolly were put to use carrying the organization's office supplies and furniture.

Office to go.

The swiftness and efficiency of the day's activities impressed even experienced bike haulers. The team of volunteers packed, moved, and transferred all their cargo to the fourth floor office in just two hours. After the hard labor was through, the group relaxed in air-conditioned comfort in a conference room in the new building. One hard-working volunteer, Ian Emmons, scored big in our drawing and went home with a new Travoy trailer, provided by our friends at Burley.

It was a lovely day for a parade... or a bike move!

The day went perfectly, and we thank all who showed up and helped out. The great turnout enticed the San Jose Mercury News to come out and cover the event. Patrick May wrote a lovely recap of the day:

The ride was filled with YouTube moments: the brief breakdown as several cyclists dealt with shifting cargo; the time when 30 arms went out at once, each indicating the same left turn at Auzerais Avenue, with the graceful synchronicity of water ballerinas; and the victorious home stretch, with the bicycles pulling into the United Way parking lot at precisely 10:48 a.m.

The procession of yellow shirts captured the attention of the community.

So a big thanks to all you bicycling water ballerinas, recumbent packers (with full family caravan), long-hauling track-standers, photographers on the fly, and xtra-weighed down Xtracyclists. Your help was invaluable. Together we showed San José just how much can be accomplished on a bike.
