SVBC returns reenergized from the National Bike Summit
The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition has returned from the 2010 National Bike Summit rejuvenated, inspired, and ready to tackle bicycling issues with even more passion! The Summit was a wonderful opportunity to meet cycling advocates from all over the country while learning even more about the issues that cyclists must overcome to enjoy safe streets that facilitate our favorite mode of transportation.
The Summit culminated in a day on the hill during which over 725 advocates met with representatives, senators, and their staffs to emphasize the importance of Complete Streets, Safe Routes to School, and of course adequate funding for biking and walking facilities.
The National Bike Summit clearly has an impact in Washington D.C. House members and their staff were anticipating us, people all over town wanted bicycle pins to wear, and we even got a visit from the Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, at the Congressional reception on Thursday evening. The week was well worth the effort, as it made sure that bicycles are not forgotten in the national discussion over transportation. How can we be sure? Well, on Monday LaHood announced that biking and walking should be given parity with automobiles in transportation planning. Coincidence? No, more like the concerted efforts of thousands of self-powered people across the nation.
