Cycling Tragedy in Cupertino

The hearts of the SVBC staff and board go out to the families, friends and teammates of our fellow cyclists Kristy Gough and Matt Peterson who were lost this weekend on Stevens Canyon Road in Cupertino.

As a community, we need to come together in the hope of preventing such tragedies. Statistics show that the majority of crashes are caused by driver distraction or inattention. This can come from something as simple as talking on a cell phone, or tuning the radio. Driving requires full attention. When behind the wheel, please remember that a small lapse of attention can have serious, even fatal, consequences.

Bicycling is a wonderful sport that brings health and joy to thousands of people in the Bay Area. Bicycling is also an environmentally friendly way to get to work, run errands, or make other short trips. We all need to work together to promote cycling and make it safer. SVBC is dedicated to working with other groups to improve the safety of our roads through our programs, such as our Share the Road campaign.

There are memorial sites set up for Kristy Gough (http://www.thirdpillarracing.com/) and Matt Peterson (http://rememberingmatt.blogspot.com/). Visitors may leave comments for their families.
