500 Bike Share Members in San Mateo
In a win for bicycling advocates and supporters of a healthy community and environment, Bay Bikes, the City of San Mateo’s bike share program, now has 500+ members! The number surpasses the City’s and SVBC’s goal of 500 members during the program's first year of the three-year pilot period, with months to spare.Bay Bikes Members have logged 3,300 trips and ridden 3,792 miles since the program launched back in May 2016.Unlike Bay Area Bike Share, the other Bike Share system used in larger Bay Area cities, San Mateo’s Bay Bikes have no docking stations. Bikes are parked at regular bike racks around town, and can be left outside the designated areas for a small fee.SVBC is committed to increasing the visibility and use of Bike Share programs. Bike share is an essential first and last mile solution that allows people to access transit and other destinations more easily, and can bring in new riders, who will demand safe and comfortable bike facilities. We are also working with our regional partners to ensure the expansion of Bay Area Bike Share/Ford GoBike is done with equitable access and usage in mind. Thanks to funding from the Hewlett Foundation, SVBC has been working since the launch with the City of San Mateo and Bikes Make Life Better to encourage employees from the area’s big companies, City Hall, and residents in affordable housing developments to try these bikes out. We've distributed information to Caltrain riders, and hosted social rides and workshops for community members to learn how to check out a bike.Interested in becoming a Bay Bikes Member? Sign up for a Bay Bikes membership ($5 hourly- cheap!), attend our upcoming workshop in February, or go on a social ride with us on Sunday, March 18, exploring San Mateo’s bike-friendly routes, on a bike share bike.Congrats to San Mateo for launching this new way to get around, and to all of the current and future members!
