Updated Local Team Toolkit aims to support community-level advocacy

We are thrilled to announce the launch of Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition's (SVBC) updated Local Team Toolkit, a resource designed to help our teams – and potentially any community action group – grow membership and advocate for change in their communities.

As an advocacy organization covering a large geographic area – San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and their 35 cities and towns – our success depends on the strength of our teams and the passion of our supporters. This is why we created – and now have updated – the Local Team Toolkit.

The toolkit provides teams with the resources to engage communities, build relationships with potential members and partners, and advance our shared mission. It is a collection of training materials, best practices, and templates that cover everything from outreach strategies to effective communication and advocacy tactics. Whether you're a seasoned advocate or just starting out, this toolkit provides ideas and resources you need to make a difference in your community.

The Toolkit is split into three pages on our website:

  • Effective Local Teams is the landing page and provides a deep dive into the roles of team members and characteristics of successful teams. Success is defined here by both continuing to grow in numbers and developing clout within your city or area to effect change.

  • About SVBC Advocacy describes how the parent organization, SVBC, does its advocacy and policy work. With limited staff time and guiding laws and documents, we can’t do it all. This page gives an explanation of how we do what we do and why and what we don’t do.

  • Local Team Resources lists the resources SVBC can provide to our teams. It also includes tech, forms, protocols, and templates that help the local teams do their work.

We believe that by empowering our teams with the right resources, we can create a more connected and engaged community of advocates. The toolkit is a reflection of our commitment to building a more sustainable and equitable future for all. We're excited to see how our Local Team Toolkit will be used to further our collective efforts to create more just and liveable communities for all!
