2023 King Tide Ride - Sponsored by Valley Water

This post is about a quarterly ride series called Wheels and Waterways. This project is funded by the Santa Clara Valley Water District’s Safe, Clean Water and Natural Flood Protection Program, and uses bike rides and trash cleanup events to showcase water infrastructure in Santa Clara County to people in the bike community. SVBC’s social rides are hosted to provide fun opportunities for cyclists of all abilities to build confidence in riding for everyday use. These rides are part of SVBC’s monthly First Saturdays Social Rides – check them out on our SVBC Events Calendar! To stay apprised of all SVBC events, sign up for our e-bulletin, and mark your calendars for our next Wheels and Waterways ride on Saturday, April 29th, 2023!

If you attended, please take our one-question survey! This helps us out a lot!

Families, friend groups, and solo adventurers made up the crowd of over 70 attendees who came to see the high tides on January 22nd. We were also lucky enough to be joined by a rockstar cast of community partners who generously shared both passion and expertise throughout the afternoon.

We started at Baylands Park, rode on the Bay Trail for a mile, then took a left onto Gold Street. When we entered the County Park and parked our bikes, we had an unobstructed, sunshine-y view of one of the largest climate change resilience projects on the entire California coast. The King Tides may not have knocked us over this far down in the Bay, but the beautiful weather, plentiful wildlife, and community experts made this a great morning ride.

We’re overflowing with gratitude for the following contributors who attended this event:

Richard Santos, member of the Valley Water Board of Directors

Linda Hutchins-Knowles, staff member with Acterra, and founder of Mothers Out Front Silicon Valley

Dave Halsing, leader of the South Bay Salt Ponds Restoration Project

James Ujah, engineer with Valley Water

Jeneya Fertel, biologist with US Army Corps of Engineers

Linda from Mothers Out Front says:

If you didn’t get a chance to fill out an “Electrify Our City” postcard, we’d be grateful if you'd sign our online postcard here. Please provide your street address where it asks for “landline” so we can deliver a postcard for your City Councilmember (or to Mayor Mahan if you live outside of San Jose). It’s important that Councilmembers hear from the public about these issues, especially since over half of them are new this year!

Also, we’d love to have you join our mailing list here. We only send one e-newsletter per month, plus occasional action alerts when there is a time-sensitive opportunity to speak up on an important issue.

Finally, you can learn more about our Silicon Valley chapter of Mothers Out Front here. Everyone welcome, whether a mother or an ally! Email inquiries can be sent to norcalmothersoutfront@gmail.com
