Bike Parking by the Numbers
We’ve been parking bikes at Levi’s Stadium since summer 2014. That’s four years of bike parking! Our Development Manager, Ehsaneh, ran the numbers and has some further insight:“We've provided parking at 75 events comprising a total of 8699 bikes, or an average of 116 bikes per event. The largest number of bike parkers is on game days for the 49ers suggesting that familiarity with the venue and parking (from season ticket holders for example) is an important driver. If we assume that each bike parker saved 5 miles of car driving, then bike parking resulted in 43,495 fewer miles driven and 17.5 metric tons fewer carbon emissions (equivalent to 19,000 lbs of coal being burned).”Here’s a chart with a more detailed breakdown.
Events | Bikes Parked | Average | |
Football (49ers) | 39 | 5704 | 146.26 |
Football (other) | 6 | 176 | 29.33 |
Soccer | 12 | 1168 | 97.33 |
Concerts | 10 | 1215 | 121.50 |
Other events | 8 | 436 | 54.50 |
Total | 75 | 8699 | 115.99 |
Breaking down bike parking concert-by-concert gets even more interesting:
Event | Bikes Parked |
Kenny Chesney (May 2, 2015) | 34 |
Grateful Dead (June 27, 2015) | 359 |
Grateful Dead (June 28, 2015) | 386 |
One Direction (July 11, 2015) | 5 |
Taylor Swift (August 14, 2015) | 54 |
Luke Bryan (August 29, 2015) | 15 |
Coldplay (September 3, 2016) | 43 |
U2 (May 17, 2017) | 164 |
Coldplay (October 4, 2017) | 81 |
Taylor Swift (May 11, 2018) | 74 |
So now we get to wonder: Are 49ers fans extra eco-friendly? Do concert-goers bike commute more than soccer fans? Why is it that Grateful Dead fans seriously kicked butt at bike commuting? These are interesting questions to ponder as we work as a community to figure out how to get more people on bikes.Do you know someone who goes to events at Levi’s? Tell them they can ride their bike! And thank you, Levi’s, for using valet bike parking!
