Gilroy’s El Roble Elementary Bike Train Picking Up Steam!

Despite a cold early morning on January 10, nothing stopped El Roble Elementary’s Bike Train as part of the Safe Routes to School initiative in Gilroy.  Bike Trains, which are organized group rides for students led by parent volunteers, are a great way to encourage a fun, healthy and environmentally friendly way of getting to school. This type of program is perfect for parents, neighbors, school staff and local businesses to participate in increasing visibility and safely sharing the road with fellow commuters. The exciting Bike Train was led by El Roble parent and Gilroy Bicycle Pedestrian Commission Chair Zachary Hilton. Parents walked and biked, and CHP rode along, for added support and to help create more awareness and encouragement for the community to participate in this growing movement. El Roble Principal Scott Otteson also participated in the Bike Train and he expressed his continued excitement for the New Year’s plan of having more frequent Bike Trains and encouragement activities to increase the number of students biking and walking to school. I was happy to ride along in support and experience the positive energy that was emanating from everyone participating, including the drivers that would pass by, waving their hands or honking their horns in support. Let’s keep the momentum going!
