Safety Workshops to High School Expands

SVBC’s youth education team has secured funding to bring Eco2School, a program developed by the Center for Climate Protection, to two high schools.  We’re excited to announce that Broadway High School and Downtown College Prep, both of San Jose, have joined the Eco2School movement!Eco2School’s aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through student-led educational and encouragement activities, and to inspire long-term community environmental action.  A major component of the program centers on active transportation, such as walking and biking. Student committees at each school shape the program according to what they think will have the most impact on their peers. Some schools organize tabling events to educate the students about the environmental effects of reducing drive time, while others like to bring lunchtime activities such as smoothie blender bikes and tiny bike races.  Last year, San Jose High School ran an energizer station for Bike to Work Day.Many participants find the Eco2School experience to be a fun, effective way to make an immediate difference in their communities. The Broadway High student committee has already voiced their interest in running lunchtime bike activities as well as finding a speaker who works in a “green” career. At Downtown College Prep, the program sparked great interest from a teacher who wants to launch an environmental club on campus. We'll be sure to keep you informed of any updates about how these two schools are creating a better environment!
