Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) is a non-profit membership-based organization that seeks to create a healthy community, environment, and economy through bicycling for people who live, work, or play in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. We have a goal of 10% of trips taken by bicycle by 2025.In the past decade, SVBC’s staff size has grown from one to ten employees, and our impact can be seen across the two counties we serve. There has never been a more exciting time to be a part of Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition!SVBC is hiring an Outreach Coordinator to oversee all outreach efforts, including membership development, volunteer management, external communications, and media.The Outreach Coordinator will create and maintain an active and effective marketing, communications, and public relations program for our organization’s major programs. Additionally, this position will oversee our membership development and volunteer management efforts. Responsibilities will include:

Program-specific communications and outreachServe as project manager for communications, marketing, and engagement functions of a large outdoor event that touches numerous neighborhoods and business districts

  • Manage marketing and communications for large event, including website, social media, email list, press communications, printed collateral, and general inquiries.
  • Coordinate community outreach and engagement strategy for large event, in collaboration with Deputy Director.
  • Manage teams of volunteers to implement outreach and evaluation plans related to event.
  • Support Development Director to ensure financial sustainability of event – potential outreach to sponsors and donors.

Membership developmentCoordinate SVBC’s membership recruiting and retention efforts

  • Process all memberships in a timely manner.
  • Maintain renewal schedule for membership and send email and hard-copy renewal solicitations.
  • Coordinate promotions and drives to significantly expand SVBC’s membership base.
  • Work with Development Director to increase individual giving and better integrate membership into sponsorship packages.
  • Work with events team to support event implementation and integrate membership throughout.
  • Keep data on memberships and partnerships current using Salesforce.

Volunteer ManagementExpand our volunteer base and develop a training and retention program to improve the skill set and reliability of SVBC’s volunteers.

  • Conduct volunteer training workshops and work nights.
  • Oversee volunteer database and mailing list(s).
  • Serve as lead contact for volunteer inquiries and feedback.

Digital communicationsKeep SVBC’s online and email communications current, dynamic, and accurate.

  • Create and maintain schedules for posting to the website and social media.
  • Author articles and compile outside submissions for bi-weekly email newsletter.
  • Write original content for all communications channels, including blog posts, program and advocacy campaign descriptions, and events.
  • Edit and publish content from other staff members.
  • Manage overall look and feel of SVBC website and project websites as necessary. Identify areas of improvement for website and recommend preferred courses of action.
  • Create presentations to be used in SVBC’s outreach efforts, geared to diverse audiences including stakeholders, decision makers, partners, and funders.

Print communications

  • Author and design (or coordinate design) of print communications including quarterly reports, annual reports, event invitations and programs, and other promotional and outreach material as needed.
  • Work with advocacy staff to prepare white papers addressing advocacy focus areas.
  • Develop and coordinate multi-media marketing campaigns that support our advocacy and educational programs.
  • Work with Development Team to create collateral that supports events and fundraising efforts.

Media

  • Author and distribute media advisories and press releases.
  • Author letters to the editor and guest editorials on behalf of SVBC.
  • Manage and expand media contacts database.
  • Work with other staff members to increase SVBC’s media profile.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field, or a bachelor’s degree in a different field with significant professional experience in outreach and communications.
  • Three or more years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • Must be able to work Monday through Friday office hours plus events, including after-hours activities and some weekends (actual hours are flexible in consideration of events schedule).

The right candidate for SVBC's Outreach Coordinator position will:

  • Have a passion for SVBC’s mission of creating a livable and bike-friendly Silicon Valley and San Francisco Peninsula; familiarity with bicycling issues or related policy issues.
  • Have excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Be able to adjust communications tone and style to address a variety of audiences, including stakeholders, decision makers, partners, and funders.
  • Be computer-literate and Internet savvy, with significant experience in using MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Be a creative and motivated self-starter.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with people of all ages, abilities, cultural groups, economic status, and sexual orientation.

Additional preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with HTML and CSS.
  • Skill in Adobe Creative Suite applications (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).
  • Familiarity with Salesforce.
  • Graphic design skills and/or experience working closely with graphic designers.
  • Video production abilities.
  • Mobile app development abilities.
  • Website design and development experience.
  • Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, or Tagalog language skills.

Salary and Benefits:Salary is to be determined, depending upon experience.
