Letter from Corinne Winter

Nearly ten years ago I joined Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) as the first full time Executive Director. Over that time, I have been so proud to see all that we have accomplished together. SVBC has become an increasingly influential organization that touches the lives of people who live, work, and play in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. Seeing my work result in meaningful benefits to the city and region I care about has been deeply satisfying. I am grateful for this opportunity to make a difference and grateful to all who have joined me in this work; our staff, board, volunteers, members, and partners.Together, we’ve grown the organization from 1 to 10 staff members, from 400 to 2000 members, and from an annual budget of $20,000 to over $1M this year. I am particularly proud of spearheading our Vision Zero Initiative, instigating Bay Area Bike Share, and successfully advocating for precedent-setting infrastructure like the green lanes crossing Highway 280 at Alpine and the miles of buffered bikeways in downtown San Jose. Check out the article here to read more about SVBC’s great decade of bike advocacy accomplishments. While leading SVBC has been a joy, the time has come for change, both for me and for the organization. Now, as I head into my tenth year, I am preparing to step down as Executive Director and hand the torch to another capable leader who will continue our legacy and take SVBC to the next level. I plan to spend some time consulting on various projects while considering my next steps professionally.Building out SVBC’s effective staff team has been an extremely enriching component of my leadership at SVBC. I feel deeply honored to have worked with such a great group of individuals and I am proud that my successor will join all of you in the company of a skilled, professional, and dedicated group of bike advocates.I also want to acknowledge both present and past Board and Executive Advisory Board members who have played a crucial role in bringing SVBC to where it is today. Their effective leadership cannot be overstated and I have benefited immensely from their guidance and support. Finally, our members, community partners, public sector champions, and business supporters are a strong and diverse group that is united in its belief in SVBC’s mission to create a healthy community, environment, and economy through bicycling. It has been a pleasure to build our relationships with so many colleagues, across multiple sectors, who see the value of active transportation and share our vision of a Silicon Valley that values, includes, and encourages bicycling for all purposes for all people. In gratitude,Corinne M. WinterP.S. – I will be continuing to work with SVBC until the Board of Directors appoints my successor. Please see the job announcement here and help us to share it widely!
