May was a rodeo

Literally, the month of May was jam-packed with youth bicycle and pedestrian rodeos that were conducted through the Safe Routes to School programs in Santa Clara, San José, and East Palo Alto. Altogether, with the help of fellow SVBC staff and volunteers, we conducted a total of 27 bicycle and pedestrian rodeos. These activities granted us the opportunity to teach important bicycle and pedestrian safety skills to over 600 students during the month of May. Overall, during the spring of 2012, a total of 37 classroom presentations and 39 bicycle and pedestrian rodeos reached over 1,100 students at eight schools in the three cities.

Some of the rodeos that were conducted in San José and East Palo Alto were made possible through support and invaluable volunteers from Facebook, Specialized, and the Kiwanis Club of Almaden. Thank you so much!

The second annual Family Fun Ride in Sunnyvale also took place during the month of May. Over 150 young and adult riders met at Ponderosa Park in Sunnyvale on Saturday May 19 to participate in the 3.4 mile ride that looped around neighborhood schools. This ride not only encouraged more kids and parents to ride their bikes to school, but it also celebrated bicycling's many benefits for health and the environment.
