Commute alternatives with the San José Green Team

I spent a couple hours at the San José City Hall today, tabling at a commute alternatives fair hosted by the City's Green Team. In addition to the SVBC table, there were representatives from the City of San José Department of Transportation, 511.org, Valley Transit Authority, Clipper, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, and others.

It's great to see the City of San José - a Bicycle Friendly Workplace - working hard to get its employees out of their cars. After all, for all the emphasis placed on technological advancement and forward-thinking in this area, we sure are highly dependent upon an old-fashioned and inefficient form of transportation!

Many people at the event were interested in trying to bike to work. Some were surprised at how easy the route to work looked once they saw it on a bike map. Others had more ambitious goals in mind - like South San José to Palo Alto - so I shared the North South Route Map with them. Some people lived farther away than they wanted to pedal, so I explained the ways they could combine biking and transit. Even if these folks don't decide to sell their car and become one with the bike, hopefully I've helped them feel confident enough to use their bike to get to work occasionally!
