California Senator Joe Simitian submitted a resolution to the Legislature to rename the Mary Avenue Bicycle Footbridge over Highway 280 in honor of long time SVBC board member and Cupertino Councilmember/Mayor Don Burnett. The resolution was approved in July. The official name is now the “Don Burnett Bicycle-Pedestrian Bridge.”

The City of Cupertino has agreed to erect signs and hold a dedication ceremony in recognition of the renaming and in honor of Don. The signs will provide a brief summary of the history of the bridge including Don’s role in making it happen. To be consistent with the design, tastefulness, and existing art, the signs are expected to cost $8,000-10,000, part of which will have to be donated by Don’s friends and associates.

If you would like to help defray part of the cost of the signs, please use the donation information below. Any remaining funds will be donated to the city for drought tolerant plantings along the pathways leading to the bridge.
