San Jose to adopt promising new bike plan

Today, November 17, the San Jose City Council is expected to adopt an ambitious new bike plan. The plan sets several admirable benchmarks for San Jose cycling, including a doubling of bike lanes from 250 miles to 500 and an increase in ridership from 1.2 percent to 5.0 percent – all by 2020.

Some of the more distinguishing elements of the plan include a Caltrain bike share program and a cycle track on 4th St. Ultimately, the city is hoping to garner a Gold-level Bicycle Friendly City ranking from the League of American Cyclists.

The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition supports the plan, and will be present at the council meeting to urge financing of the initiatives and frontloading the more experimental suggestions so that there is ample time to study their effects.

SVBC has been an active voice in the bike plan process for some time now and we have met with council members, Department of Transportation officials, and other community organizations in preparation for the plan release. You can read more about SVBC’s involvement and statements to the media from the Mercury News and SF Streetsblog here and here.
