Wheels Up Pedal2Health

In partnership with El Camino Hospital Community Benefit Program, SVBC is working to improve public health through bicycling. Why? Biking has the potential to address many of our community’s problems while enriching lives with health, environmental, economic, transportation, and social benefits. The Pedal2Health program aims to create healthy and safe communities through bike safety education classes and bike rides for residents of low-income housing communities located in and around Vision Zero safety corridors. The program encompasses several goals:

  • Create lasting bike riding habits that lead to improved health for low-income families and individuals

  • Reduce bicycling crashes and injuries by increasing safe bicycle riding practices

  • Build relationships and trust between residents and police officers that leads to improved safety of residents within Vision Zero corridors. Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all.

The program will do this in partnership with the San Jose Police Department, leading bike rides and building relationships with the families and individuals who live in affordable housing. The goal of the program is to develop lasting and safe bike riding habits that improve human health while continuing to build stronger relationships with San Jose’s dedicated law enforcement officers.Building relationships within the community is important to us at SVBC. We are thrilled to team up with SJPD, the City of San Jose, affordable housing developers First Community Housing, EAH Housing, SCC Housing Authority, and community-based organizations Project Access, LifeSTEPS, and Valley Palms neighborhood association on the collaboration. We are honored for the support from City Councilmember Donald Rocha, City Councilmember Lan Diep, City Councilmember Tam Nguyen, and Vice Mayor Magdalena Carrasco. Lastly, with gratitude to El Camino Hospital Community Benefit Program for their commitment to creating healthy, safe, and sustainable communities through bicycling. We look forward to seeing you on the next ride!
