Re: Caltrans Community-Based Transportation Planning Grant
Dear Honorable Mayor Lewis and Members of the Council:
Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition strongly supports the Town of Atherton’s request for a Caltrans Community-Based Transportation Planning Grant to identify viable short and long-term solutions to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety on El Camino Real.
Over the past 10 years, El Camino Real in Atherton has experienced over 30 crashes involving bicycles and pedestrians, including two fatalities in 2010. Improving safety on El Camino will save lives and reduce injuries, and also help drivers who are faced with conditions that put them at risk of unintentionally causing harm.
Working together, Peninsula cities and Caltrans have worked together in the Grand Boulevard Initiative to create a vision of El Camino Real that is safer for all users. Now we have opportunities to realize that vision at the local level. The planning process will engage Atherton residents and stakeholders in nearby communities to create practical solutions for improved safety on El Camino Real.
Thank you for your efforts to improve safety in Atherton.
Sincerely,
Corinne Winter
President and Executive Director
