Ditch your auto in the TransForm Car-Free Challenge UPDATE: Team SVBC page now established

During the month of June the average Bay Area resident will drive 540 miles and the average American driver more than 1,000 miles. Think you can do better? How few miles cay you drive? We want you to join the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition in taking the Car-Free Challenge in June to find out! We are putting together a team of folks like you who are setting and reaching personal low mileage goals for the month of June (some are going entirely car-free, others are just trying to drive a little less).

Join a huge community of people in setting and reaching a personal low mileage goal in the month of June - plus win great prizes and share your stories of taking transit, walking, and bicycling. Whether driving less is stretch for you or already a way of life, we want you to take the Challenge!

The Car-Free Challenge is inspiring people to go above and beyond in an attempt to reduce their environmental impact, get healthy, and show that we do not have to rely on cars for everyday tasks.

Some examples:

Janet Abelson, who lives in El Cerrito, is going to try to log 0 miles in a car in June by not accepting any car rides (she is a wheelchair user) and instead using public transportation only.

Chris Lepe from San Jose lives in an area that doesn't have great public transportation. But Chris is trying to drive just200 miles in June by using his bike to commute as often as possible.

SVBC will be participating in the Challenge and we encourage all our readers to do the same. There is power in numbers, and active participation in this event can help change the course of Bay Area transit planning. This is a timely message to send because of SB 375, a new law in California that will require regions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by improving transportation choices and how communities are designed so they require less driving. Plus, it gives us another excuse to hop on our bikes!
