Bike Plan Policies

1. Bike Infrastructure Projects:

This item is focused on identifying, with DOT's input, the projects that will move forward this year. These are project that will need our help showing up at meetings and providing input to make sure the design is solid and doesn't get watered down by folks who might not understand things like the need to remove on-street parking. We can divvy things up by project or you can assign yourself to your neighborhood to pay attention to the projects coming up near you!

2. Bike Plan Policies:

The Bike Plan has LOTS of great policy promises and our job is to prioritize the good ones and get them adopted. The first step is to understand which policies have already been implemented. We made a request of DOT and they are currently spending staff time to gather that information across the various city departments. DOT plans to present the results of that information gathering at the next BPAC meeting, March 25th. We hope to see you all there to hear about the City's progress on the Bike Plan policies.

3. Clean Bike Lanes:

There are several elements of this underway, one of which is to push the city to allocate money in the budget process for a "strike team." The Mayor's budget message likely comes out in a week or so and we'll need to show up at budget hearings and community meetings to let them know we want funding to keep the bike lanes clean.

4. Trails:

There's always a lot of energy around this issue - keeping them clean, clearing flooding quick, making sure reroutes are solid and there's been recent talk about the Water District project for the Lower Guadalupe. Who wants to be on this subcommittee?

5. Rides w/City Councilmembers:

One of the key ongoing activities of SVBC is for each local team to build relationships with the councilmembers. We have a goal of hosting three councilmember rides this year. Diana, SVBC's professional staff will help interface with the council offices but we also need folks to help plan the routes etc. Who would like to join this effort. In the recent past we've had Councilmembers Kamei, Candelas, Torres, Cohen, Doan and at the time, councilmember Mahan out on rides with us. These rides are very important in helping policy makers understand our issues AND build the trust/relationships needed to be successful advocates.

6. Team Growth:

And, none of this happens without the power of the people, what is called Pedal Power in SVBC's Strategic Plan. The Council will not listen to us unless we can demonstrate we have power in numbers and so we always need to be building the number of folks who want to get involved, show up at hearings, write letters etc. We do that by hosting rides, tabling and more. So, we need folks to plan those kinds of events and make new people feel welcome/included/plugged in and effective.

In partnership with Veggielution, San José local team members along with community volunteers deliver monthly farm produce boxes to 50 families in the East side.
