Books, bikes, and bands
On October 18, 2014, Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition partnered with the Public Libraries of San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and Mountain View to put on a family library-to-library biking tour. This event incorporated the fun of bicycling with the delightful resources Silicon Valley libraries have to offer. Each library site integrated fun arts and crafts activities, a library tour, and safe bicycling instruction prior to departing on a group ride to the next destination. The Sunnyvale Library greeted bicyclists with a live band, and the Mountain View Library also offered a bike maintenance station which provided free bicycle safety checks and minor repairs. Over 60 participants took part in one or three bike rides, which covered over 13 miles. This event was another example of how youth and adults can incorporate bicycling as part of a fun weekend outing. Special thanks to Michelle Rowic (2014 Bike Commuter of the Year), Emily Weak, Rachel Collier, Angela Ocana, and the many volunteers and library staff that made this ride possible.
