When you calm traffic everybody is happy
In another great move by the city of San Jose's Department of Transportation to make streets safer and calmer for all residents, the city announced the completion of a project to convert sections of Julian St. from a one-way westbound street into a two-lane, two-way street. The project was completed on August 24th between 4th and 21th streets and involved new striping and signage changes.
Initial feedback from residents and business along the corridor is overwhelmingly positive. Work has now begun on the final phase of the Julian/Saint James couplet conversion (see map below). The plan is to convert the high speed curve, which is typically seen on suburban arterial roadways, to a grid style roadway most commonly seen in downtown street designs. The new roadway will not include a Class II bike lane but the slower traffic will be safer for both pedestrians and cyclists.
