About Bike to Wherever Days
Bike to Wherever Days is Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition’s transformation of the traditional Bike to Work Day. In pre-pandemic times, on a single day, thousands of bike commuters would take to the streets annually on Bike to Work Day, swooping in to pick up swag bags and celebrating bicycle life with other cyclists at fun Energizer Stations on the way to work. Then came working from home, and then the rise of hybrid work schedules.
As a result we’ve transformed the event, for a three-day celebration under the banner of Bike to Wherever Days. The traditional Bike to Work Day takes place on a Thursday, this year on May 16, with all the hoopla and Energizer Station fun you’d expect. The fun continues with Bike to Wherever Days on Friday and Saturday May 17-18, with more fun events and Energizer Stations for riders across both counties, and capped by a big “Bike Bash” party.
While the BTWD celebrations span from May 16-18, the entire month of May is national Bike Month, with celebrations, events and fun throughout. And why not have a full summer of fun? You’ll see the full calendar on our website.
Key elements of BTWD include:
Pledge to Ride. We start early, seeking to draw thousands of people across the Bay Area to pledge to ride at least once during BTWD. Those who pledge get a sought-after bike bag, other goodies, and the chance at a prize from our random drawings.
Bike Champion of the Year. This award honors those who inspire bicycling in their communities. Nominations are sought March 1 through March 29 for one champion each for San Mateo County and for Santa Clara County.
Cities Challenge. Which of the nearly three dozen cities in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties will claim the Pedal Power title, for having the greatest proportion of residents who pledge to ride? Pledge now to give your city a boost!
Bay Area Bike Challenge. Bicyclists across the Bay Area, log your rides in May via the Ride with GPS app to reach a collective goal of 30,000 miles for the 30th anniversary of Bike to Work Day.
Energizer stations. Informal teams, bike shops, companies and other organizations set up dozens of these stations across San Mateo and Santa Clara counties to support and energize riders.
Bike Bash big party emphasizing fun, food and connection.
Rides, classes and events. As part of its commitment to bicycling as a mode of transportation, SVBC will connect riders with classes, fun rides and events across the region to help cyclists find inspiration, pedal safely, build relationships and communities, find new routes, and make joyful use of bicycles in their lives.
Ways to get involved. Volunteer with SVBC, join a local team, donate, sponsor us, and see other ways to take part in building and enjoying healthy, just communities through safe and accessible bicycling! Or see specific Bike to Wherever Days volunteer opportunities.
About Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition
