At approximately 3:37am, South San Francisco Police officers were reported of this incident on the 600 block of Grand Ave and the person was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The South San Francisco Police Department is requesting anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact the department at 650-877-8900, 650-952-2244 (Anonymous Tip Line), or via email at web-pd@ssf.net or tips@ssf.net (Anonymous Email Tips). https://www.ssf.net/home/showpublisheddocument?id=22618

In the ten years from 2009 through 2018, there were 133 bicyclist injury collisions in South San Francisco and 228 total vehicle collisions that involved a pedestrian fatality or injury. Of these collisions, six led to death. (This data is take from the SSF GEneral PLan transportation report). To avoid future crashes and to make its city streets safer, the City of South San Francisco will be having a resolution at this week’s  council meeting on 2/24 to adopt a Vision Zero goal to achieve zero traffic deaths and serious injuries on city streets by 2025.

Many cities in the Bay area have adopted a Vision Zero Policy and a few have also adopted an action plan to implement the policy. Cities like Fremont, which adopted the Vision Zero Action Plan in 2016, have already reduced their crash rate by 30%! SVBC has a Vision Zero goal for everywhere within San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties with an emphasis on areas with the most collisions and low-income communities and communities of color.  We’re glad the city of South San Francisco is turning wheels towards adopting this Policy and we look forward to working with the city on next steps to help them achieve their goal.

SVBC has a North SMC local team which includes the cities of South San Francisco, Colma, Brisbane, Daly City, and San Bruno. This team is involved in working towards advocating for making streets safer for people walking and biking in this area. The team goals include various efforts around Vision Zero, Safe Routes to School and other bike/ped projects – One of them being – adoption of a Vision Zero policy in South City. Join this team today to stay up-to-date on what is happening in your city and get involved.
