Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) exists to promote increased cycling in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. To accomplish this goal, SVBC advocates for improved and expanded bicycle infrastructure and other facilities, including bike lanes, paths, racks, lockers, accommodating traffic signals, capacity on transit, and more. Additionally, SVBC promotes bicycle culture through events and activities such as Bike to Work Day, Bicycle Friendly Workplace, and Valet Bike Parking at a variety of area events.
We pursue our goals in two ways. Our Programs seek to change behavior by giving people the tools they need to ride a bike: education, encouragement, and community. Our Advocacy Initiatives aim to improve the environment for cyclists by affecting policy; in other words, we get the attention of the folks in government who can redirect funds and prioritize the kind of projects that make it easier to get around by bike.
We can’t do any of this alone. In addition to our staff of five, we boast 1,000 members who add to our voice and help us accomplish our goals. We are a coalition, after all, which means our work is the result of hundreds of people working together to give the bike a fighting chance in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Peninsula. By volunteering at an event, joining a Local Team, or even just attending a city meeting, our members make our presence count from Gilroy to Daly City.
