Citizen Bicycle Advisory Committees increase with requirement

Any regular readers of SVBC's blog may have been following this saga since at least 2010 - the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) has required cities to have Bicycle Advisory Committees (BAC/BPAC) in order to be eligible to receive Transportation Development Act - Article 3 (TDA-3) funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects. This requirement has unfortunately been easily and often skirted by municipalities throughout the Bay Area.SVBC has been working to increase the number of Bicycle Advisory Committees, as an important forum for people who bike to weigh in on city projects and ensure that they meet the needs of all road users and become part of a city's health and environment strategies.Even though this requirement has been on the books for years, it hasn't always been enforced. That has now changed, and with the upcoming TDA-3 funding cycle, cities and counties that lack BACs have decided to get in gear in order to qualify for funding.We are happy to report that at least 3 new BACs have been created:

  1. San Mateo County Bicycle Advisory Committee, which will temporarily be part of the Parks and Recreation Commission until a permanent solution can be established,
  2. Redwood City Complete Streets Committee,
  3. Belmont, as part of the Parks and Recreation Commission.
