*San Mateo Labor Day Family Fun Ride & Bicycle Rodeo

This will be the third family fun ride San Mateo has organized in the past year, and second one to occur on Labor Day. Last year, Bay Meadows was the site of the first family fun ride as residents rode through the closed streets of the new Bay Meadows development. This past May, the second family fun ride started on B St. and made it’s way through Central Park and down Palm Ave. For the latest installment, they will be using The Village as our neighborhood to have a safe, fun, relaxing community ride. Once again Safe Moves will be onsite to provide a free bicycle safety training course, as well as Beeline Bikes, a mobile bike service for tune-ups. Additionally, the first 100 children will receive a free event t-shirt! New this year, PAL will be offering a bicycle helmet trade up. Bring in any helmet that no longer fits your child and receive a new, properly sized helmet for free! Summer Bicycling Workshops for 100 San Jose Youth + Free Bikes!

Summer Bicycling Workshops for 100 San Jose Youth + Free Bikes!

Bikes and sunny days: what could be better? This summer, SVBC partnered with the City of San Jose’s Fit Camp program to deliver fun, engaging, and educational bicycling workshops to youth throughout the city. Nearly 100 youth from six community centers gained knowledge and confidence as they learned essential bike riding skills through instruction, fun games, bicycle rodeos, maintenance workshops, and rides. Some of the top highlights from camps included a couple of rides through neighborhood streets and along the Los Gatos Creek Trail. Through this program, we were also as able to donate 18 bikes and 39 helmets to youth in most need, as well as provide a fleet of bikes for the Roosevelt Community Center to utilize in future year-round bike programs. These bikes were donated by Palo Alto-based software company TIBCO, who also enjoyed a fun, team-building day of building the bikes and getting them ready for the youth. We thank TIBCO for their generous donation of bikes and the City of San Jose’s Safe Summer Initiatives program for funding these workshops that kept youth active and engaged through the summer.
