Has it been a long time since you’ve ridden a bike or are you simply looking for a refresher? Come learn the basics of bicycling at our Intro to Urban Bicycling Workshop. The course is a one-hour presentation covering many of the basics: the rules of the road, route planning, and, especially for Bay Area Bike Share riders, Bike Share 101. The course is followed by an optional 30 minute guided ride using the Bike Share bikes. No membership is necessary, but you must be 18 years of age or older. Santa Clara Police Dept. bicycling workshop

Learn how to safely and confidently use a bike for transportation, exercise, and family fun. Taught by the Santa Clara Police Department (SCPD), this workshop will serve as an introduction to the basic rules of the road, proper safety equipment, laws that apply to bicycles, techniques to increase predictability and visibility, route planning, common misconceptions about bicycle riding, a review of local intersections and how to approach them and new legislation impacting bicyclists. If you know how to balance and pedal but would like to improve your bicycle handling skills and confidence, perhaps to prepare for commuting or errand-running, this on-bike, off-street practice session is for you. Your instructors will demonstrate, and attend to you as you practice: Mounting and dismounting confidently Starting up without hesitation; stopping safely and smoothly Turning confidently without wobbling Scanning behind without veering, to check for gaps in traffic Steering confidently with one hand, to give a hand signal or use a water bottle Smoothly changing your line of travel to the left or right Bring your working bicycle and bike helmet.
