Borregas Avenue Bicycle Corridor Update
The City of Sunnyvale continues to develop an extensive bike network within the city limits. One such development is the Borregas Avenue Bicycle Corridor project, which will provide safer and more convenient bicycle and pedestrian access between central Sunnyvale (residential areas and Caltrain) and north Sunnyvale (major employment area and light rail) along the north-south Borregas corridor. Specifically, bike/pedestrian bridges over routes 101 and 237 to to overcome the major east-west barrier along the corridor.
The over-crossings will eliminate approximately two miles of detours which currently exist for bicyclists and pedestrians who wish to cross over the freeways. The project will also improve access to the Bay Trail, other recreational facilities in Baylands Park and the VTA Light Rail.
In August 2008, construction of the bridges commenced with a projected completion date of March 2009. Due to an unexpected problem with a water line, a different contractor was needed to mitigate the problem; delaying the open of the two bridges until April 2009. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be planned to celebrate the completion of the bridges.

Mountain View Honored as a "Bicycle Friendly Community"
Mountain View accepted the League of American Bicyclists Bronze Level award/designation as a "Bicycle Friendly Community" at the Council meeting on Tuesday, February 24th. This was a great honor for the City as it adds to an extended track record of three such designations!
Bay Trail's Moffett Segment
There is now a Tentative Date for the opening ceremony of the Bay Trail's Moffett Segment: Earth Day 2009, April 22. This is contingent on completion of two items, one of which depends on attention in Washington DC to little things in spite of the economic turmoil. That's why the date is tentative and two months away.
Cyclists are expected to participate in the 11 AM ceremony and carry the bolt-cutters 2 miles on the trail from the Sunnyvale gate to the Mountain View gate. More details at the T-30 day date.
Update on Mountain View Projects
At the January 28th Mountain View Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee meeting, the BPAC received an update on the City's capital improvement projects.
This update provides the status as of January 1, 2009. All completion dates listed are the targeted dates which may change at any time for a variety of reasons.

Sunnyvale Report
Seasons Greetings!
The big news this time is the possibility of major improvements to bike accommodation on Mary Avenue. The city has begun to move ahead with a long-planned car bridge from the north end of Mary over 101 and 237 into Moffett Park, in order to handle traffic for existing and future office developments. The bridge will have good bike access when completed in a decade or so, if the project is not stopped by opposition from nearby residents. The really exciting part, however, is that the environmental report prepared by our Traffic Engineering staff included a favorable assessment of the feasibility of implementing a 4-to-3 lane conversion, with the addition of bike lanes, on Mary south of Evelyn! In their motion to approve the bridge project, the City Council also directed staff to seek funding for the lane reconfiguration. It may be possible for this to be done independently of the bridge, and therefore considerably faster. If you’d like to see it happen, send your words of encouragement to bpac [at] ci [dot] sunnyvale [dot] ca [dot] us.
