Santa Clara Area Report

San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail

The first undercrossing closures along the trail this season took place on Friday, October 31st, between Old Mountain View Alviso Rd. and Highway 101. Precipitation for that day was only 0.03 inch, but heavier rainfall had been forecast for Saturday. The practice of the Street Dept., which is responsible for locking and unlocking the undercrossing gates, has been to lock certain gates on Friday if heavy rain is forecast for the weekend. In this case, the rainfall for Saturday, November 1, was 0.52 inch, which was a new record for that date. Rainfall totals for Sunday and Monday were 0.08 and 0.10 inch respectively so that the gates were probably open by Monday morning.

The undercrossings north of Scott Blvd. are the most likely ones to be closed during rainy weather because they are at lower elevations and are also affected by tides. Some of the bridge structures require that the trail descend further into the creek channel to maintain sufficient clearance. In some cases, reopening may be delayed until debris deposited by floodwater is removed from the trail surface.

City of Santa Clara Historical Bike Tour

The City of Santa Clara is one of the Bay Area's oldest cities, and a bike ride along its quiet streets is a pleasant way to visit its many historic sites. An easy 6 mile route includes Mission Santa Clara, Carmelite Monastery, Victorian-era homes and a pioneer cemetery.

On Sunday September 28th, the Hon. Jamie McLeod (Santa Clara City Councilmember and SVBC member) will lead a historic bike tour of the City of Santa Clara with stops at the historic sites.

Santa Clara Report

School Zones

In a previous edition of this report, I reported on the bad behavior of some drivers dropping off or picking up students at Buchser Middle School in September of last year. Cars were waiting in No Parking Zones, blocking the bike lane and staying in the waiting zone much longer than the posted three minute maximum. I did not witness any collisions, but there were several close calls.

Last January, I was again counting bikes at Buchser School, and the improvement in driver behavior was striking. Cars were waiting only in the designated zones, the bike lane was clear, but most of the students on bikes were still riding on the sidewalks. I spoke to one of the teachers acting as crossing guards at dismissal time, who told me that a SCPD Traffic officer had recently been issuing citations there. He wasn't there on that particular day, but the student pick-up traffic was still calmed. The teachers would like him to be there every day. They said some of the drivers can be quite rude to them.

Santa Clara Station Area Plan Open House

The Draft Station Area Plan has been completed, and represents almost two years of community involvement and careful planning. Strategies for the Plan are based upon extensive community visioning and input gathered throughout the planning process, and include an emphasis on walkability, mixed, vibrant land uses, and enhanced transit access for Santa Clara. Reports summarizing technical work, three previous community workshops (on visioning, alternatives, and the Preferred Plan), and stakeholder meetings are available on the project website at http://www.santaclarasap.com.
