Pico Blvd. gate closure

SamTrans has been fielding a number of questions concerning the recent closure of the Pico Blvd. gate at the San Carlos base. Here is the official explanation from Mark Simon, Executive Officer for Public Affairs, SamTrans/Caltrain:

San Mateo County San Andreas Trail closure

The San Mateo County Parks Department announced that the unpaved portion of the San Andreas Trail between Larkspur Drive and Hillcrest Drive will be temporarily closed from December 7, 2009 to December 18, 2009 for hazardous tree removal.

For trail closure updates, please contact the Crystal Springs Ranger Station at (650) 589-4294.

Caltrain board meeting

Caltrain has completed the increase in bike capacity approved by the Board in February. Join the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition's Bikes on Board project in thanking the Caltrain board (agenda item 3).

The project will also be there to encourage Caltrain to add bikes to its Short-Range Transit Plan. Show up to the meeting and you will receive a “More Bikes, No Bumps” sticker to identify you as a supporter of Caltrain’s onboard bicycle service. Your presence truly makes a difference, because when the Board sees an audience full of bikes onboard supporters, they take notice!

Public comments needed for South San Francisco bicycle master plan

The City of South San Francisco’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) held a special meeting on September 14, 2009. The planning consultant working with BPAC and City staff, Alta Planning + Design, presented an overview of the SSF Bicycle Master Plan, which included descriptions of the types of bikeways, existing facilities, proposed facilities, and prioritization criteria. The presentation ended with the audience dividing up into two groups and marking up large maps with their ideas for bicycle projects.

San Mateo Bike Map Corrections

Mike Harding from SVBC's Peninsula Committee wrote to say:

John Langbein, author of the first two versions of the County bike map, and I have volunteered to collect corrections that should be made to the map before any second edition is published. If changes can be made sooner to the digital map version, so much the better. The map is beautiful and useful, but it's not perfect. There are some dirt roads shown that are not bikeable, for instance. The object of this effort is to remove inconsistencies and add missed or new bike routes. Please send your input to me or John, verbally or digitally.

Please send your comments and corrections to smc_bike_map [at] yahoo [dot] com. John will collect them from there.

If you haven't seen the map yet, you can get one free from your local city hall or download it (2 sides) from here:

Thanks in advance for your help.

San Andreas Trail Closure Extension ++

The trail segment will not open Saturday, February 21 as the rains delayed repairs. The trail segment is expected to reopen Saturday March 7.

San Andrea Trail segment reopening delayed (blame it on the rain)

The trail segment will not open Saturday, February 21 as the rains delayed repairs. The trail segment is expected to reopen Saturday March 7.

San Andreas Trail Closure Extension

San Andreas Trail has been closed for about a month, which has impacted some bicyclists who use the trail to commute to work. The SFPUC Water Department has been repairing a water line. They found more leaks than expected and the San Andreas Trail will remain close until February 21st.

Please see the attached news release: 020509 San Andreas Trail Closure.doc

San Andreas Trail Closure

Sent to Dave Holland, Director of Parks at the San Mateo County Department of Parks.

Excerpt:

We understand that closing the trail may be necessary for a significant maintenance project. However, please be aware that this trail is not solely for recreational use. Bicyclists also rely on trail facilities for commuting. For these cyclists, simply starting their trips at a different point or not riding for a month are not options. These cyclists are currently using a section of Highway 280 in lieu of the trail. Needless to say, this is a more dangerous proposition for them.
