If so, you should know about the Bicycling Improvement Request Form, available at

Using this form, you can submit comments and suggestions regarding existing problems or potential low-cost improvements to enhance bicycle safety, improve the City's bicycle facilities, and encourage bicycling (e.g.; pavement maintenance, signing, striping, loop detection and signal timing, bike rack installation, hazard removal, education, enforcement, etc.).

Senior Games cause road closures around Stanford campus

The Senior Games will require a few road closures and slowdowns throughout its two weeks at Stanford. The following are expected:

Saturday, Aug. 1

2 to 11 p.m.: Road closure in front of Palo Alto City Hall, on Hamilton Avenue between Ramona and Bryant streets.

Mountain View BPAC Meeting

The March Mountain View BPAC meeting will be held on March 25th starting at 6:30pm at City Hall, 500 Castro Street.

The agenda packet is attached to this posting along with the draft minutes from the February meeting. The main agenda items for this meeting are review of the 2009 work plan, TDA projects, and a discussion of Bike to Work Day activities.

Mountain View Honored as a "Bicycle Friendly Community"

Mountain View accepted the League of American Bicyclists Bronze Level award/designation as a "Bicycle Friendly Community" at the Council meeting on Tuesday, February 24th. This was a great honor for the City as it adds to an extended track record of three such designations!

Update on Mountain View Projects

At the January 28th Mountain View Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee meeting, the BPAC received an update on the City's capital improvement projects.

This update provides the status as of January 1, 2009. All completion dates listed are the targeted dates which may change at any time for a variety of reasons.

Permanente Creek Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge over 101 - Meeting to review and comment

The City of Mountain View is currently designing a capital improvement project to extend Permanente Creek Trail from its current terminus north of Highway 101 to the south side of Old Middlefield Way by constructing a pedestrian/bicycle bridge over Highway 101 and a tunnel under Old Middlefield Way.

The community is invited to attend an informal meeting to review and comment on the proposed project at the following time and location:

The beloved 15-person pedal-powered Busycle is leaving the Bay Area for a museum in its home town of Boston. Join us as we celebrate the time we got to enjoy its zany bicycling fun with presentations from legends of the bike industry, including Jobst Brandt, author of the timeless book, "The Bicycle Wheel" who will give a slide show of his Alpan bike travels; Jack Baker, the inventor of the modern day, short wheel base recumbent will talk about the history of the recumbent bicycle; Tim Brummer, builder of the fastest production bike, the Lightning F-40, will talk about why his bikes are so fast.

There will be test rides from well known recumbent manufacturers, exhibitions of kinetic sculpture vehicles, a silent auction, and exciting music by Bay Area musicians including Marla Goody and Iya Kahn.

Mountain View Environmental Sustainability Task Force Recommendations

The Mountain View Sustainability Task Force will present its recommendations at a City Council Study Session on Tuesday October 7th at 6:30pm at Mountain View City Hall in the Council Chambers on the 2nd floor.

Middle School Bike Skills

This class is for children ages 10-14 with a parent or guardian. The emphasis is on interacting safely with traffic. The classes cover:

* the basics of traffic law

* basic bike and helmet fitting

* the most common types of bike crashes and how to avoid them

* how to position yourself properly on the road

* how to let drivers know your intentions

* how to deal with left turns and 4-way stops

The course begins with a classroom-style discussion, then moves to skills practice in a blacktop area, and finishes with a ride around the neighborhood with immediate feedback about safe riding practices. Total time is 3-4 hours. One parent or guardian must register and attend from each family. Everyone should bring a bike and helmet.

Palo Alto Festival of the Arts

The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition will be providing bicycle parking at the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts. Please consider volunteering for a three-hour shift. It’s a very satisfying experience because people are so grateful for knowing their bikes are being guarded. And there’s no need to limit your time to only one event.

Presenter Bill Burton Wright of Library Bikes will have some “Roue Libre” bikes to share as well as a powerpoint presentation. He says his presentation will focus on all the steps Paris took towards a successful launch. It will be followed by an informal Q&A and discussion of implications for Palo Alto.

Confident City Cycling / Street Skills / Road I Class

Would you like to use your bike to get around town, get exercise and be kind to the environment, but are afraid to ride in traffic? Improve your confidence and your bike/ traffic negotiation skills by taking this class taught by a certified instructor with the League of American Bicyclists.

This class gives cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. The course covers bicycle safety checks, fixing a flat, on-bike skills and crash avoidance techniques and includes a student manual. Recommended for adults and children above age fourteen, this fast-paced, nine-hour course prepares cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling.

To take the class, you should own an operable bike, be able to ride it at least 100 yards and know how to steer it. You will also need a bike helmet. If you don’t already know how to ride a bike, separate private instruction can be arranged by contacting the instructor.

Fee: Sliding scale based on household income, $60-$110 (members of First Presbyterian Church of Palo Alto receive additional discount)

After Prologue Party

All bike parking volunteers and Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition Members are invited to the bar area of Gordon Biersch to hang out and have a brew after the Amgen Tour of Palo Alto Prologue on Sunday, February 17th at around 6 PM. This is a come-if-you-want, pay your own meal, hang-out party where you can meet up with some of the other volunteers to celebrate this great accomplishment of parking more bikes than you ever dreamed. There will be no fancy speeches or official announcements, but just a bunch of weary smiles on some really awesome people. Come and celebrate with us!

Community Bike Ride from Mitchell Park to Downtown Palo Alto:

Join Council Members and other Palo Altans on this fun ride! Ride down East Meadow to Bryant Street (the Ellen Fletcher Bike Boulevard). Ride ends at Lytton Plaza in downtown Palo Alto. Ride the entire route OR join in anywhere along the route!
