Los Altos BPAC Report

The city council held a working session on the Stevens Creek Trail Feasibility Study. Jeannie Bruins, co-chair of the citizens' task force, presented a short summary of the history, methodology, and conclusions of the study. This was followed by a lively public comments session and council discussion. The study includes five possible trail routes and recommends one. The recommended route picks up the trail in Mountain View on the east side of Hwy 85 (where the current Mt. View route will cross the freeway) and continues southward on the east side to (almost) Fremont Rd.

Los Altos BPAC report

The Stevens Creek Trail Feasibility Study is at last completed. The study was reviewed by the BPAC at its regular meeting on August 20, and the committee voted to accept the study and recommend its approval. It will be reviewed at the Traffic Commission meeting (in Los Altos, the BPAC is a set up as a sub-committee of the Traffic Commission) at their 8/27 meeting.

Following this, a special "working session" of the City Council is scheduled for Sept. 16th to discuss the study. A working session is a more informal meeting, designed to provide give and take between the council and the city staff -- in other words, a chance for the council to explore an issue in more depth. The working session is an open public meeting, so members of public will be given time to address the council. The trail is a controversial subject, and we can expect the "opposition" to be in attendance. I would encourage all advocates to attend this important meeting.

The recommended route not only links Stevens Creek Trail in Mt. View to Cupertino, but also improves bicycle/pedestrian facilities on Fremont and Grant, both major collectors, improves access to several schools, and improves bicycle connections from Los Altos and Mt. View to Rancho San Antonio park and the Mary St. bridge over 280.

The complete study will be available to the general public on Sept 10. Contact Larry Lind at larry [dot] lind [at] ci [dot] los-altos [dot] ca [dot] us to get a copy. Additional information can be found at http://www.losaltostrail.org/.

Los Altos Arts and Wine Festival

The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition will be providing bicycle parking at the Los Altos Arts and Wine Festival. Please consider volunteering for a three-hour shift. It’s a very satisfying experience because people are so grateful for knowing their bikes are being guarded. And there’s no need to limit your time to only one event.

Shifts available on both days:
