how to get from san mateo to other side of 101?

i saw a pedestrian bridge on google maps that crosses the 101 a bit north of san mateo. is that the only option to cross 101 where it would be relatively comfortable? i could cross on a major road if i had to, but wouldn't be interested in it.

Hi Peter,
The new Monte Diablo bike/ped bridge is probably the most comfortable 101 crossing in that area. Both sides are accessed from quiet neighborhood streets and it's just north of downtown San Mateo. 3rd Ave has a separated bike path in the middle of the overpass, but you still need to negotiate major intersections to get on and off the path. Riding across on 19th Ave isn't too bad if you want to cross further South, but you're still dealing with cars trying to get on and off the freeway. Not a lot of options, but it's better than the Belmont, San Carlos, Redwood City area. Good luck.
